Visiting Terceira Island in the Azores
Terceira Island is about a two-hour flight from Lisbon Airport. Terceira is a volcanic island and is part of the nine islands in the Azores.
The best months to visit Terceira are from May to October with July and August peak tourist season. We went in March and skipped the crowds.
Things to do at Terceira Island
We were there for only 3 days/2 nights meaning we didn’t get to explore as much as we wanted to. We also had some official business to attend to there which kept us from exploring the Island more.
However, we did get to see a lot of the island in our downtime since we rented a car which we picked up at the airport.
There are several car rental options inside the airport.
Once we left Lages Airport and began our drive to the little cottage we rented, we were amazed by the views. The island is breathtaking and lush with greenery.
There are cows everywhere in beautiful pastures (Their local cheese, milk, and butter is delicious)
There are numerous “miradouros” (lookouts/viewpoints) around the island to take in a large view of its beautiful landscapes.
Other places to visit:
Streets of Terceira Island at
Angra do Heroismo
Our first day at the Island was quite cloudy, but the weather cleared up for the following days. The cobblestone streets add a special charm to this island.
The buildings were well-maintained and the city was delightfully clean.
Pousada Forte Angra do Heroismo
We didn’t know what to expect when we first walked in, I thought it was just an old fort but it has been converted into a hotel.
We just walked in and walked through the Fort’s walls.

Booking.comWhere to eat at Terceira Island
Our first meal at the Island happened while walking around the city looking at different restaurant menu’s which are usually placed on the door/windows.
All the restaurants we’ve visited in Portugal and the Island have daily specials which supplement the printed menu. Specials are usually less expensive.
We chose “O Chico restaurant“, and ordered the Bife da Vazia (Steak, Egg, rice, salad, and fries).
They also have a great wine selection starting at €4.50 for a half a bottle.
The service was super friendly and the food delicious, especially after eating airplane junk food, this restaurant hit the spot.
Address: Rua de Sao Joao 7, Angra do Heroismo, Terceira 9700-182 Portugal
For lunch the following day, we stopped at Cervejaria Angrense, this time we ordered Bifanas (Pork Steak). If it was up to my husband, he would have eaten here for all meals. Friendly atmosphere, great portions, tasty food, and apparently the best rice he’s ever eaten.
Address: Alto das Covas 23, Angra do Heroismo, Terceira 9700-220 Portugal
On the day we were leaving we stopped at “O Internacional” and we ordered steaks again. Superb location and our food tasted great. They do have a homemade cake they sell, but we were too full to try.
Address: Rua da Palha 50, Angra do Heroismo, Terceira 9700-144 Portugal
Accommodations at Terceira Island
We stayed at this beautiful cottage with SPECTACULAR VIEWS of Ilheu das Cabras, a dual islet.
Unfortunately, I didn’t take any photos inside the property (my mistake) but there’s video footage on my Instagram Highlights named “Terceira”.
We were treated to a basket of goods made from the local cows on the island! Adega Ilheu is the name of the property in Feteira.

Booking.comHow to get around Terceira Island?
As I mentioned above, we rented a car at the airport. I feel it would be the best way to explore the island. However, you can use public transportation or, taxis as well.
Is it worth visiting Terceira Island?
You bet! I wish we had booked a longer stay, there was so much more I wish we had seen. We will certainly be back to explore this beautiful island and also visit other islands in this archipelago.
There was so much we missed!
Missing from this post is our visit to Algar do Carvão, I’ll be publishing a separate post on it alone with video footage. It was an amazing place to visit. Be sure to come back to read it.
Add Terceira Island to your list of places to visit, you won’t regret it.
Thanks for reading!
